Testimony to Howard County Council supporting the revitalization of Columbia Downtown

We commend the Howard County Council and many others who have participated fully and honestly in the public discussion and planning for a vibrant future for our city.  We only ask that the Council consider not only the voices of the community today, but the needs of our future citizens, our children and grandchildren and support legislation that will truly guide us towards our shared vision.

Columbia Tomorrow Bike Event brings focus on the need for better connectivity in downtown Columbia

On November 4th, 2009, at least for one day, Columbia Maryland had its own Mayor.  Darwin Hindman, Mayor of Columbia Missouri came to our city to share thoughts on how to create a bike friendly community.

Thank you to all those who supported the event with the Mayor.

  • The Columbia Association organized a great bike ride around the city with over 30 bike riders attending.
  • Princeton Sports provided the Mayor with a bicycle and provided SAG support for the ride.
  • The Horizon Foundation hosted a "Bike Power Lunch" where business and civic leaders came together to discuss making bike transportation a reality.
  • And Howard Community College held a great event that evening, The Bike Project:  A Literary Exploration which explored biking through writing.

Darwin Hindman is a man obsessed with ending society's love affair with the car.

The bike-commuting mayor of Columbia, Mo., shared his insights Wednesday with like-minded community leaders and residents keen on turning Columbia, Md., into a mecca for bicyclists and pedestrians.

At age 76, the affable mayor not only talks the talk, he rides the ride, logging 60 miles a week while running errands and commuting on his 20-year-old converted mountain bike.

Yet his first impression of Howard County's planned city colored all of his remarks - Columbia, like the vast majority of American cities, is oriented around the automobile.
